Hey, Just a couple of things for you... First, Jim D'Ville, Famed Ukulele Player, Teacher, and Raconteur, stopped by the Shop and asked me three questions. What were my answers? find out here... 3-questions-with-tiki- king

Also, Our Friend James Hill sent us a note, and we think you ought to know too!
James Says:
"...I can't think of a better way to celebrate my 31st birthday than to officially launch Man With a Love Song, my brand-new album! And as if that weren't enough fun for one day, I'm unveiling my new website, too! Yee-haw!
Ok, calm down (me, not you). Man With a Love Song doesn't 'technically' go on sale until September 13th but you can preview four whole tracks right now, learn more about the album and test- drive the new website today:

Enjoy!

James Hill is coming to Don Quixotes!
Sun June 5 at 1pm $15 adv./$15 door seated, under 21 w/parent
From the website:
5-time Grammy Slack Key Winner, Hawaiian Singer and Ukulele master
Keoki Kahumoku and who many consider one of the top five Ukulele
players on the planet and James Hill from Canada , who plays a stunning
array of Ukuleles covering bluegrass, Jazz, folk, old timey, gospel
and more combine to take you to on a music expedition you won't soon
forget. So how does a kid from Canada become what the Honolulu
Star-Bulletin calls a "rare peer" of Hawaii 's premier ukulele players?
Nearly three thousand miles east of Honolulu is James' hometown of Langley,
British Columbia , where ukulele instruction has been mandatory in many
schools since the late 1970s and where James was introduced to the
ukulele at the age of nine. For James, the uke was a sea of possibilities
unto itself and inside its tiny wooden shell he saw his life in music.
He was hooked. You will be soon as well.

Show starts at 8:30, I will be going on about 9:00.
Grab your flask and clean your Fez, this is gonna be fun!
The Crepe Place is Located at:
1134 Soquel Ave. Santa Cruz, CA 95062 - 831-429-6994
Originally from Baltimore and now based in sunny Oakland, songbird and solo uke-slinger/guitarist, Tippy Canoe , made the switch from a 5-piece drum kit with the garage-pop princesses The Kirby Grips (Sympathy For The Record Industry), to a 4-stringed ukulele in 2003. I n 2009 she upped the string count and added guitarist to her resume. SheÕs on a mission to bring sincere uplift in a severely down-slanted era by spreading her hook-laden pop-meets-roots music.
http://www.tippycanoe.net
The Juncos are the bastard love children of a string quartet and a hillbilly hellcat... assorted bits of American & Ethnic folk styles blended with a lyrical truth that speaks to what's real.
http://www.reverbnation.com/thejuncos
Tiki King has been a quirky staple of the Santa Cruz Ukulele underground for over a decade. This ain't your grannies Ukulele music, but original tunes that range from dark jazz, to upbeat dance numbers, to raucous drinking songs.
http://www.tikiking.com
The Western Skylarks are a classic country duo.
They sing and write in the style of George Jones, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, etc. Trucker ballads and "somebody done somebody wrong" songs.

I will be setting up my little grass shack and vending Jan. 30th at Trader Vic's Palo Alto for the Tikiaki "Lei-Over" show.

Ukulele Babylon - Press Release

On Saturday, March 5th at 7: 00 PM something scary is going to happen at The Brookdale Lodge and it has nothing to do with the ghosts that are said to lurk the halls. It will be an Invasion of Ukuleles!!!
Ukulele Babylon will kick off with a screening of the alt Ukulele documentary, ROCK THAT UKE, followed by 6 live acts who know how to take a Ukulele on the wild side.
Beau Vine, Ukulele Babylon's organizer as well as performer in the show, says that ukulele music is entering a new renaissance fueled partially by an explosion of acts who are taking the instrument in new directions.
"There is a growing alternative Ukulele sc ene in California with wildly creative artists and it is right under peoples noses!"
Artists scheduled to play are Tippy Canoe and The Paddle men, The Oliver Brown Trio, Tiki King and the Idol Pleasures, The UkeAholics, and Beau Vine (The Atomic Bard). Making a special trip to participate will be ukulele legend and Grammy Award-Winning Recording Artist, Ian Whitcomb.
The show will begin at 7:00 PM, Saturday March 5th at the Brookdale Lodge, 11570 Hwy 9, Brookdale, CA. Tickets can be purchased for $8.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door.
