Tiki King's
Virtual Bartender-About Alcohol

A note about alcohol

Many "non alcohol" ingredients, such as bitters, extracts, and even juices, may contain small amounts of alcohol. Alcohol is also used in small amounts in some products as a preservative. Even many beverages listed as "non alcohol" such as non alcoholic beers may contain small amounts of alcohol. By law, non-alcoholic beverages may contain no more than 0.5 percent alcohol by volume. For products to be treated as an alcoholic beverage under the law, they must contain at least 0.5 percent alcohol by volume. By comparison, natural fermentation produces similar low levels of alcohol in most fruit juices. Typical levels of alcohol in orange juice range from 0.2 percent to 0.5 percent. Although the very-low alcohol beverages do not contain enough alcohol to cause intoxication when taken in reasonable doses -- it would take about 30 12-ounce servings in one hour to bring a 150-pound man's blood-alcohol concentration up to about 0.10 percent alcohol by volume. Depending on your (or your guests) degree of alcohol avoidance, you will want to check the labels of your ingredients before using, or serving.
